Estonian folklore is rich in enchanting, terrifying, and unique stories, just waiting to be rediscovered. In game design and worldbuilding, folklore offers one of the richest sources of inspiration – providing original plots, characters, and visual motifs. But how can we bring myths and folktales into games in a way that resonates both locally and globally? What could be the next great story to emerge from Estonian folklore?

Speakers:

  • Ott Madis Ozolit – will open the event with an introduction on the broader potential of folklore in the games industry. He will share examples from both Estonia and abroad where national heritage has successfully inspired games.

  • Marju Kõivupuu – folklorist and cultural historian, who will guide the audience through the rich world of Estonian folktales and mythology. She will introduce well-known stories, heroes, and motifs, highlighting what makes our folklore unique compared to others. Her talk aims to inspire participants to envision how these tales could come to life in video games.

From October 3 to 5, the Tallinn Business Incubator will host a Game Jam: Estonian Folklore Edition, where participants will have 48 hours to experiment with transforming folklore into playable experiences. This talk serves as a pre-event, designed to spark ideas and provide inspiration about the treasures hidden in Estonian folklore.

This event is free and for everyone interested in games, storytelling, and cultural heritage!

The event will take place on September 24th, starting at 18:00 at Tallinn University in room A-543. The event will be held in English.

Be sure to check out the Facebook Event as well.
